I'm getting pestered by someone trying to get me to invest in 2008 en-primeur, so now it's all making sense. The lines about massive demand in 2012 for the London Olympics with chronic undersupply seem to lose their shine when placed in the context of a weak and overpriced market.

In response to:Tasting the First Growths

Great, comprehensive tasting notes, Jane!

Having popped into the shop last week in Bordeaux, it does seem a great idea, right in the middle of the city as well. And I'm glad they are running some tests on the enomatics.

Bearing in mind that, as a consumer, when you visit the châteaux you only get to taste the latest released vintage and/or maybe one or two earlier, I think this shop would do well to devote some of its enomatic stock to somewhat older vintages. A lot of consumers are looking to try more ready-to-drink vintages (and can't necessarily afford to buy a whole bottle in a restaurant), and this is an experience that's hard to find in Bordeaux. Hope Max Bordeaux can address this and I bet they'd get through them in a week or two if they did their marketing right and/or only stocked them during busy 'wine tourist' seasons.

In response to:Chateau Palmer, Limited Edition Wines

Hi, how nice to hear from you.
Just back from Bordeaux - La Conseillante and Clos Fourtet were absolutely delighted with the quality of the vintage and across the course of a couple of days on the right bank there were even whispers it might be better than 2005!

The Chateaux we visited on the Left Bank were also delighted, if a little bit more cautious (not least because most still have grapes to harvest).

The wonderful Lucien Guillemet of Boyd Cantenac allowed us to try some of his fermented Merlot (primal to say the least!) and he told us he aims to start picking Cabernet Sauvignon this tomorrow (16th October) or Monday.

We came home yesterday and there was still plenty of Cabernet Sauvignon in many of the vineyards along the road from Pauillac to Margaux.

Mouton in Chinese means mountain and it is easy to pronounce; apparently this is not enough to attract neither Chinese nor European consumers into buying this brand.

Internal analysis indicates that the Mouton is lagging behind any other 1st growths over the last 6 years period with cumulative returns of about 72%; comparing this performance to the Ausone - the current outperformer - which has returned 212% over the same period and the Lafite - the second best performer - appreciating over 205% would give a better picture of market perception about the Mouton brand.

The only vintage that was going to mark a turnaround for the Mouton brand is 2006 when Mouton was widely acclaimed the wine of the vintage with a respectable Parker's score of 98/100.

With 1982 and 1986 being the only vintages rated a perfect 100 and trades somehow subdued to compare to other "perfect wines", I suspect that the market want to see a powerful sign before capitalising on the Mouton brand; that powerful sign is called Parker score and until the most influential wine critic in the world would rate any vintage of Mouton a perfect 100 the rest is pure speculation.

That was my impression, but it was meant to be light-hearted, and as I said, I spent a long time living near Marmande (in fact, yes, in the Lot et Garonne), so know an industrial estate when I see one... but I love the Lot, and Cahors wines, and hope that came across in the piece (I have followed it with an article in Harpers Wine & Spirit also). I spent last weekend in the Lot, in a truly beautiful part of the department along the Dordogne river, with steep gorges and dramatic views - very wild indeed! Very best, Jane

In response to:Cahors Malbec

Can't imagine where the 'endless industrial estates' are. Cahors is the largest town in the Lot department with only 20000 inhabitants, and the towns to the west towards Bordeaux are all very considerably smaller. The Lot department depends largely on agriculture and tourism and had faorly little industry. Perhaps you mean our neighbouring department of Lot-et-Garonne which does have some larger towns. Since the great attraction of the Lot is its beautiful, varied and peaceful countryside, it's a pity to give such an erroneous impression. I have been living in the Lot department for the last 15 years by the way.

In response to:New EU Wine Regulations

Change the names and confuse the consumer.
