It was announced today that Marseille will be the European City of Culture 2013, joining the eastern Slovakian city of Kosice.
I was in Marseille this summer, and felt pretty sure that it was going to win (it is a gorgeous and vibrant city, and is still in the middle of a big regeneration project, that will be helped enormously by this). But I was still hoping that Bordeaux would win.
Message from Alain Juppe, Bordeaux mayor:
'Bordeaux candidature gave birth to a dynamism and created a groundswell of action: Bordeaux 2013 brought together the people of Bordeaux, its governing bodies, its economic strength and its ambassadors, who have started projects that have nourished us, and our media and the public at large, many of whom went to great lengths to wear the colours of Bordeaux 2103, to send message of support and to welcome the jury here on September 1.'
